Tips to Keep The Germs Away During Halloween

The year goes smoothly until the waves of sickness come around. With flu and cold season on the rise, viruses tend to spread more during the holidays. But that shouldn’t get in the way of celebrating, right? It’s possible to have a spooky Halloween and still be safe! A little creativity can go a long way. So, read more for our favorite tips on keeping healthy and safe for Halloween.
Trick-or-Treat safely
There are creative ways to join in on the treats without being tricked by germs! Here are some fun ways to pass out candy to neighbors while staying socially distant:
-
Make treat bags and tie them to tree branches, bushes, or a fence to have the neighbors “pick” them as they walk by.
-
Set out a candy station with treat bags on a decorated table on your lawn or porch. Doing so allows trick-or-treaters to grab and go without contact. Avoid putting candy in bowls to prevent people from reaching in the same place.
-
Use a long PVC pipe or a shipping tube to create a candy chute to deliver candy six feet away – stand at your front door, drop the candy in the pipe and let it slide down to the trick-or-treaters!
-
Surprise your friends by “ghosting” them – not with a sheet over your face, but with the ole ding-dong ditch approach. Leave a candy bag on your friend’s doorstep, knock on the door, and then quickly leave.
For the victims
Maybe you’ve already been attacked by the germ zombies and have no choice but to spend Halloween at home. There’s no excuse for why you can’t enjoy it still! Stay in the spirit with these virtual alternatives:
-
Trade in your big costume party for a Zoom party with family and friends. Avoiding face-to-face contact and large crowds are still necessary to stay safe.
-
Streaming services roll out all the Halloween movies around this time of the year. Grab some popcorn (or candy corn) and play a movie of your choice!
-
If you can’t take the kids trick-or-treating, have an egg hunt in the backyard. Grab the flashlights and scavenge for candy-filled eggs.
-
Have some fun with a piñata! Creating your own piñata could be a fun activity. Fill it up with candy and wack away!
The only thing you’d want to stick to your fingers around this time of year is candy, not germs! Prevent spreading germs by washing your hands frequently, covering your coughs and sneezes and avoiding touching your face. If you are feeling sick, don’t risk anyone else’s health — stay inside and enjoy the fun at home!
